The four families have lived in the same locality, sometimes even the same house, for three or four generations. Three of the four live in a street we shall call Long Street and one in Short Street (not their real names). Not all family members have remained in the area and those who have not been mentioned in the interviews have been excluded from the Family Trees.
All names are pseudonyms. This was not originally the intention of participants, but recent events have made people fearful of losing their jobs (or even worse) through speaking their minds, a sad reminder of William’s early words in his interview ‘There is no freedom of speech left in this country’
